“Fawaka” means “How are you?” in the Surinamese language. Suriname is a small country in South America near to Guyana, French Guyana and Brazil and was a colony of The Netherlands from 1667 - 1954. Suriname gained their full independency on November 25 1975. Until the day of today the mother tongue in Suriname is Dutch. Along with the independency a lot of Surinamese people choose to immigrate to The Netherlands. Nowadays a lot of Surinam words are used in daily conversations in The Netherlands. These words are even to be found in the new Dutch dictionary.

"Fawaka Amsterdam" is created by Veronica Jibodh, the owner and designer of POUCHI. Veronica is born in Suriname, immigrated to Amsterdam in 2003.

"Fawaka" is a daily used word in the Netherlands and of course in Suriname.
